Danielle Fishel has disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis. The 43-year-old actress, known for her role as Topanga Lawrence on the ’90s sitcom Boy Meets World, which aired from 1993 to 2000, shared the news on her podcast, Pod Meets World. Fishel also reprised her role in Girl Meets World, which aired on Disney+ from 2014 to 2017.

During a recent podcast episode with her co-hosts and former co-stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong, Fishel spoke about her health update. She revealed she has been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an early form of breast cancer. “I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, a form of breast cancer,” she said. “It is very, very early. It’s technically stage zero.”

Fishel assured listeners of her positive outlook. “I’m going to be fine. I’m having surgery to remove it,” she explained. “I’ll have follow-up treatment. I’ve had to make many decisions over the last few days.” Fishel initially hesitated to share her diagnosis but chose to do so to encourage others to prioritise their health. She recounted how she caught the cancer early due to scheduling her yearly mammogram promptly.

“The only reason I caught this cancer at stage zero is because I made the appointment as soon as I got the text message reminder,” she said, urging others to get their mammograms.

The American Cancer Society defines DCIS as stage 0 breast cancer, where cancer cells are contained within the ducts and haven’t spread to nearby tissue. They note that about 1 in 5 new breast cancer cases are DCIS and that nearly all women diagnosed at this early stage can be cured.

Treatment usually involves either breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or a simple mastectomy, often followed by radiation therapy after BCS. Mammograms are crucial for early detection.
