A French tradie who picked up a bollard and looked at the Westfield Bondi knifeman said the crazed killer had “empty eyes”.
Damien Guerot and his compatriot Silas Despreaux were at the gym on Saturday afternoon when they came across the scene of a massacre.
Mr. Guerot picked up a retractable railing and confronted 40-year-old killer Joel Cauchi as he walked menacingly up an escalator.
Images of the tense standoff went viral on social media, with many praising Mr Guerot’s bravery.
Now the French construction worker has revealed how he and Mr Despreaux foiled Cauci’s murder spree.
“We tried to get him, but he went down the stairs,” Guerot told 7News.

“Then we saw him go down, so we followed him from the top. We might have tried to throw the bollard at him, but it didn’t work.’
Mr. Guerot said he was running on pure “adrenaline.”
‘We didn’t think. You can’t think at that moment,” he said.
Mr Guerot said Cauchi had “empty eyes” and that photographs of him released today looked nothing like the man who went on a random stabbing frenzy.
“His eyes looked like empty eyes… he wasn’t there,” Guerot said.
The two mates launched the bollards at Cauchi, but he managed to escape.
Mr Guerot grabbed a chair and gave chase with NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott, who shot dead Cauci after lunging at her.
The Frenchman praised Inspector Scott’s quick thinking.
“She was basically the hero, she did the work,” he said.
Social media was flooded with praise for Mr Guerot.
“This man, who tries to stop a murderer with a bollard, is truly a hero,” wrote one.
Another said: ‘He deserves a medal.’
Cauchi fatally stabbed six people and injured at least twelve others during a violent attack in the busy shopping center on Saturday afternoon.
There are fears the death toll will rise as three people, including a baby, fight for their lives.
