Even as the majority of countries, ranging from wealthy to developing islands, reject the weak language around fossil fuel phase-out in the penultimate draft of the Global Stocktake at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change strongly condemns Change (COP28), India could benefit from the fine print around brown and green fuels.

The draft text released on Monday is silent on the phasing out of fossil fuels, which appeared to be a legitimate goal and was supported for the first time by many countries in the climate negotiations.

India has vociferously demanded that the phase-out include all fossil fuels, including oil and gas, and not just coal.
