Seeing Aberash of Ethiopia battling HIV, he said, struggling to contain his emotions, “I couldn’t bear this” when his young son came to her bedside in 1995.

After hearing that the woman was alive and well thanks to the charity, a tearful Lenny told viewers: “They survived thanks to everyone, mums, taxi drivers and cubs all donating.”

Back at the studio he was left ‘speechless’ when it emerged that a large portion of the studio audience had all been helped by Comic Relief.

Lenny was also shown a video of Aberash standing next to her son, who was now a grown man. The host threw his hand to his mouth in shock.

He said: ‘I’m speechless, thank you so much for organizing this.’
