Shortly after making a memorable comment during Wolves’ quarter-final against Coventry FA Cup, commentator Clive Tyldesley appeared to suggest he retire, sparking consternation among football fans.

Tyldesley’s comments at Molineux, where Coventry emerged victorious in a thrilling five-goal encounter, won him praise for his coverage of the dramatic turnaround, along with an apparent joke at Kate Middleton’s expense.

After the match, Tyldesley shared images from the commentary box alongside Ally McCoist, captioning it: ‘Maybe the last FA Cup game I’ll ever call it. Thanks for the big finish!!”

The hint at retirement did not go down well with many football fans who read the message.

While some urged him to continue, others took the opportunity to praise the 69-year-old.

‘ITV’s biggest mistake is not keeping you as lead commentator. An even bigger mistake is that BT/TNT no longer kept you as the voice of UCL. CBS’s profit.’ one user posted.

“Ahhh, what a way to go out. You were classy as always today. I hope this isn’t the last!’ shared a second.

Another said: ‘I really hope this isn’t your last Clive. Loved your communication today and the chemistry with Ally is the best in the business’

‘I really loved the commentary. Perfect accompaniment to the final. I wish you and Ally were the first choice team on ITV.’ a fourth wrote.

Despite Tyldesley’s role in the match against Molineux, Sam Matterface took over for Sunday’s clash between Manchester United and Liverpool.

The FA Cup match was full of drama, with a quick double from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Hugo Bueno appearing to turn the match around, but Coventry rallied to complete a remarkable comeback.

First, Simms leveled the score with a header, redeeming himself for a glaring miss earlier in the match. Then, in the 10th minute of extra time, American striker Haji Wright sealed the victory with a curling try, sending Coventry into the semi-finals at Wembley.

Coventry’s last trip to Wembley saw them defeated against Luton Town in the play-off final for Rob Edwards’ Hatters to the Premier League.

Matterface has been ITV’s lead commentator since 2020 and is expected to continue in that capacity in future rounds. Although Saturday’s match started quietly, it quickly erupted into drama.

Ellis Simms initially broke the deadlock for Coventry following a VAR review for handball, in which Tyldesley made a ‘photoshopped hand’ comment.

It comes after Princess of Wales Kate Middleton apologized for editing a Mother’s Day photo while she was recovering from abdominal surgery. The princess issued a statement after the palace came under increasing pressure to reveal the truth behind the photo of Kate and her three children.

The world’s major photo and news agencies – including PA – ‘killed’ the image over claims it had been digitally manipulated.
