Chipotle fans liken its food to ‘slop’ after the Mexican food chain announces fourth price rise in just over 2 years

Burrito fans in the US have slammed the fast food chain after it announced another price increase – for the fourth time in just over two years.

The ‘modest’ increase in prices ‘to account for inflation’ could have an effect on menu items across the board, as it has yet to be determined which food items will be hit with the increase.

Laurie Schalow, Chipotle’s chief corporate affairs officer said CNN: ‘For the first time in more than a year, we are going to take a modest price increase to offset inflation.’

When the Mexican restaurant last raised its prices in July 2022, customers ended up paying $1 extra for their entrees starting in August.

Chipotle previously raised its prices by four percent in the first quarter of the same year.

According to Insiderit came shortly after another hike in June 2021, which was implemented to balance rising workforce wages, according to the company.

Fans hit out after the Mexican-themed restaurant raised its prices again and branded the food an unpleasant ‘slot’.

Many took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express their anger, with one person passionately saying: ‘Already too expensive for the dried up food you get.

‘Used to love the place. Lost its luster for me though. I hope others have a better experience.’

Another added: ‘Hot take: Chipotle is sloppy and we don’t know why anyone likes it.’

Others shared their dismay at the already high prices, with one user saying: ‘I think it speaks volumes about convenience when people pay $30 burritos.’

An individual shared: ‘I stopped going six months ago when I paid $13 for a burrito.’

Some people said that the price increase encouraged them to pre-pack their lunch, saying, ‘Sweet, I plan to take my lunch from home for the same reason, as well as the fact that Chipotle sucks.’

But X wasn’t the only social media site where customers vented their anger, and many took to it as well Reddit to buck the fast food restaurant’s expensive price tag.

One fan pointed out: ‘For the prices you pay at Chipotle, you might as well go to a sit-down restaurant.’

Another continued: ‘Just make sure I don’t go there much. I used to eat it three to four times a week in the late 2000s. They have gone down on quality so far, all while raising prices.’

Others reflected on the larger portions and lower prices, writing: ‘High prices and lower portions…what a shame.

“I miss the days when the workers would feed me big ships of food on my bowl or make a burrito out of their seams.”

But, seeing this as a potential positive for local businesses, shares: ‘It’s actually great, some fast food restaurants fall into this trend. People can actually support local restaurants.’

MailOnline has approached Chipotle for comment.

It comes after the fast food chain developed a robot that could cut restaurants’ guacamole preparation time in half.

Chipotle announced the robot prototype last July in light of labor shortages in hospitality.

The collaborative robot, aptly named Autocado, is capable of cutting, pitting and peeling avocados by itself in just 50 minutes.

All employees have to do is fill the device with 25 pounds of avocados and Autocado does the rest.
