Chinese-American found guilty of spying for Beijing in Brooklyn court

A Chinese-American scholar was found guilty in a Brooklyn court on Tuesday after being identified as an illegal agent working for Beijing. Shujun Wang, who started a pro-democracy group in New York, used his role to monitor dissidents and relay information to the Chinese government for over ten years.

Prosecutors revealed that Wang lived a dual life on behalf of Beijing’s Ministry of State Security. By posing as a pro-democracy and anti-Chinese government advocate, he gained the trust of genuine activists and passed their information to Chinese authorities.

A federal jury delivered the verdict on Tuesday, convicting Wang of operating as an illegal agent. “The indictment could have been the plot of a spy novel, but the evidence is shockingly real that the defendant was a secret agent for the Chinese government,” stated U.S. Attorney Breon Peace.

Wang denied the charges. His defence argued that his actions might not have been directed by Chinese officials.
