In the northern province of Chiang Mai, a Burmese man fatally shot a dog, claiming the animal had eaten his chickens, before allegedly grilling and eating it.
The Save Elephant Foundation in Chiang Mai contacted the Watchdog Thailand Foundation (WDT) and Mae Taeng Police Station to seek justice for the female dog named Daeng. The foundation revealed that the Burmese man, later identified as 29 year old Jai Aong Tun, reportedly killed Daeng and ate the animal.
According to the foundation, the 10 year old Daeng was a nursing dog with at least five puppies. After the incident, the foundation adopted all of the puppies for further care.
Locals in the area told the foundation and police that they saw Jai Aong Tun shoot Daeng, cut up the animal and grilled it. They were sure that Jai Aong Tun then ate the dog.
Police investigated the scene and collected evidence before issuing an arrest warrant for Jai Aong Tun. His arrest was made on Tuesday, June 18.
Jai Aong Tun confessed to killing Daeng and grilling the animal but denied consuming it. He said he let fish eat Daeng’s meat and buried the remaining parts of the animal on his plantation.
Jai Aong Tun claimed that he killed the animal out of anger after it came to his home and ate his chickens on multiple occasions. He warned Daeng’s owner, Narong, not to let it eat his chickens, but to no avail.
Jai Aong Tun faces three charges including:
- Section 358 of the Criminal Law: damaging or depreciating another person’s property. The penalty is imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both.
- Section 20 and 31 of the Animal Protection Act: abusing animals. The penalty is imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both.
- Section 7 of the Act on Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive, Fireworks, and Imitation Firearms: possessing a gun without permission. The punishment will be imprisonment for up to 10 years, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both.
