Charges dropped against Aurora landlord amid gang takeover

Authorities in Colorado have decided to dismiss all accusations against the landlord of the Aurora apartment complex linked to the violent Venezuelan gang takeover.

Documents obtained reveal an agreement between the city and Nome Partners. City officials agreed to drop multiple charges against the Aspen Grove apartment complex landlord for neglecting property maintenance.

The landlord faced charges related to another property featured in a viral video where members of Tren de Aragua (TdA), a violent Venezuelan migrant gang, forced entry with heavy weaponry.

The agreement specifies that in exchange for dropping charges, Baumgarten agreed to waive his right to a speedy trial. Nome Partners LLC consented to sell or lease the property, cover up to $60,000 in cleanup and security costs, among other conditions.

Baumgarten’s company attributed the Aspen Grove apartments’ decline to the TdA gang takeover, leading to uninhabitable conditions.

An investor informed that police were aware of the gang problem for nearly a year. Letters obtained indicated that the situation escalated, prompting the investor to seek local officials’ help in removing TdA members, who had allegedly “forcibly taken control” of the property.

The landlord also considered hiring off-duty police officers for security, a request the Aurora Police Department reportedly denied.

Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan stated, “He was told we didn’t have the staffing to provide adequate security at all his properties.”

Rep. Greg Lopez, R-Colo., is urging the Biden administration to address the issue of illegal immigrants involved with gangs in the U.S. He introduced a new bill to combat migrant gangs, which, if passed, would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary to issue detainers for migrants known to be affiliated with gangs.

This is one of several bills proposed by House Republicans in response to rising crime by illegal immigrants in various U.S. cities and towns.

In a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Lopez urged immediate action to “apprehend, detain and deport any members of TdA or other known foreign criminal gangs in Colorado,” with a focus on Denver suburbs like Aurora.

“With millions of encounters every year, criminal networks including Tren de Aragua have taken advantage of the situation and are wreaking havoc on our communities.”

Illegal immigrants have been implicated in several high-profile killings in the U.S. this year, including Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nungaray.

Federal authorities believe TdA is active in the Denver metro area, terrorising multiple apartment complexes in the city and nearby suburbs. Nonetheless, local politicians maintain that media reports about Venezuelan gang members taking over apartment buildings are exaggerated.

Aurora law enforcement officials also deny a gang takeover. Interim Aurora Police Chief Heather Morris stated in a Facebook video that, after speaking with residents, a different picture emerged. “I’m not saying that there aren’t gang members in this community.”
