Celebrity chef reveals the truth behind restaurants’ ‘specials’ menu as debate rages over whether it’s simply a way to shift expiring food

Celebrity chef Manu Feildel has spoken out about a debate over the ‘specials’ menu in restaurants.

On Monday’s The Kyle and Jackie O Show, hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson argued about whether the menu items are a way to move food that has expired.

Jackie, 48, believed the special menu was a creative outlet for chefs, while Kyle, 52, thought it was about not wasting ingredients before they spoil, but when they called Manu he revealed the truth.

‘It depends where you’re going. If you go to the coffee shop on the corner, they might try to throw out what’s in the back of the refrigerator,” says the 49-year-old host of My Kitchen Rules.

“But when you go to a restaurant, a special is a special. That’s why it’s called special.’

However, Kyle put the French chef to the question and asked him about stale meat at the supermarket.

“Isn’t that the same as the old meat at Coles that has turned gray with the ‘special’ sticker?”

‘No, it’s not special. But the price is special,” Manu replied.

Kyle and Jackie then admitted that they were both technically right about the special menu.

“Well, thanks for the truth, Manu. So some restaurants do it as a business, but at the top of the city, reputation is important and they do it as a creative outlet.”

“So we were both right,” Jackie said.

It comes after Manu was the subject of a cruel on-air prank orchestrated by The Kyle and Jackie O Show and his son Jonti.

18-year-old Jonti, who signed for the South Sydney Rabbitohs junior division, was recorded pranking his father by telling him he had ruined his NRL career before it had even started after a wild weekend with drugs.

“I messed up, Dad. Next week the Bunnies are going to drug test us,” Jonti joked.

He continued, “I started smoking weed with my friends last weekend, so I’m not sure if it’s in my system or not.”

At this point, the celebrity chef went ballistic as he scolded his son, “Come on, man. Come on. F**k. F**k, Jonti. F**k, f**k, f**k, Jonti. Come on. S**t, brother.

‘We’ve talked about this. Think about your crazy career, man. I don’t want to send you away, Jonti. I really don’t want to tell you, but you know you have to grow up.’

Feildel went on to say that he already thought Jonti’s drinking was too much and tried not to judge it, “but now you smelled damn reefer.” What’s next? F**k.”

But when Jonti asked his father to pee in the cup for him so he could pass the upcoming drug test, Feildel was convinced that his son would have to take responsibility for his actions, even if it meant losing his place on the team would lose.

Feildel sounded relieved when he realized it was a joke. “You bunch of w**kers. Oh my God. I was about to cry.”
