The View’s Sunny Hostin clashed with her co-host Sara Haines during Tuesday’s episode of the ABC show as the panel discussed the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling that frozen embryos are children.
Sunny, 55, who conceived her two children using IVF, admitted that she fully supports the court’s landmark decision, arguing that an embryo is an “unborn child” and claiming that it is “certainly more than just an egg and a separated sperm’.
However, mother-of-three Sara strongly disagreed, arguing ‘if you bring a small embryo into the world, it is not viable at any level’ – and also suggested that the courts should ‘prosecute IVF as abortion for rich people’.
The ruling in question stemmed from a lawsuit filed by a group of IVF patients whose frozen embryos were destroyed in December 2020 when a patient took them from a cryogenic storage facility and accidentally dropped them on the floor.

The Alabama Supreme Court has now ruled that the patient who accidentally destroyed the embryos can be sued for wrongful death for a minor act, which Sara said was a “stretch.”
Sunny shared her own personal experience: “As you all know, I had five miscarriages before we turned to IVF. We went through three IVF cycles. As a result, I have had two beautiful children.
‘We used up our entire savings. Each cycle was not covered at the time, it cost $30,000 and it was important enough to us. Now we have frozen embryos, but because we are Catholic, we knew that we could not destroy the embryos because in our eyes they are children.’
Sunny continued, “And we couldn’t just give them up for research because in our opinion they were children, and that’s why I feel responsible in the sense that we used every single embryo and if every single embryo became a child, then we do that. take care of that child, and thank God we don’t have frozen embryos anymore because then I would probably have an extra baby.”
When Whoopi asked Sunny if it was “because of her religious beliefs,” Sunny replied, “My religious beliefs are that conception is the beginning of human life.
‘But if you look at an embryo, it is certainly more than just an egg and a separated sperm.
‘They wait a few days. Ideal transfer is five days. You are transferring a human embryo that will attach to your uterine lining and become a child,” she explained, before adding that her opinion is “partly based on her religious beliefs and partly also on science.”
Sara then decided to speak up and announced, “But if you bring that little embryo into the world, it’s not viable on any level. So I’m not criticizing your personal beliefs, because I believe that’s what people believe, but I believe it’s an exaggeration to call this a ‘minor’.”
When Sunny interjected and called the embryo an “unborn child,” Sara fired back, “Well, look, that’s where I’m at, because the whole miracle of life and the religious argument for the brilliance of science just don’t mix.
‘Yes, embryos, yes fertilization, all this can happen naturally, but not here. This great gratitude goes out to the scientists and doctors who can help with this.

“Because the judge in the court essentially said, in his opinion, ‘Human lives cannot be unlawfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of the holy God.’ Okay, then let’s leave it to the holy God on the day of judgment and not to the holy court!’ Sara cooked.
“They’re going after religion, while science has brought this here,” the blonde TV presenter added, before confidently declaring: “I’m not pro-life!”
However, Sister Act star Whoopi quickly corrected her, saying, “You are pro-life! There is no one at this table who is not pro-life!’ as fellow co-hosts Joy Behar and Alyssa Farah Griffin looked on.
Eager to emphasize her opinion, Sara continued, “My point here is: I believe it is a woman’s right to choose what happens to her body, to her doctor, medical staff, family and the like.
“So when pro-life people argue about this, I say we should – and I personally don’t think so – but if you’re consistent, go after IVF like the rich man’s abortion, because there are embryos everywhere . which are frozen and this is hurting the lowest incomes…’
Whoopi intervened and said, “Here’s the thing, you can do this just fine with a little embryo and a little egg… How about you take care of the kids that are here?
“The problem is that the people who make these laws aren’t the people who know anything about how this works? They don’t know how IVF works.
“They don’t realize that they’re judging people in a way that I don’t think they’re prepared for.”
Eager to have the last word before the show hit a commercial break, the Oscar-winning star added: “I want to see them in Alabama getting annoyed about taking care of the kids that are actually there. Punishment is fine, but wrongful death is a bit much.”
