A standout student-athlete who broke his university’s 100-meter sprint record has died by suicide, officials confirmed
21-year-old Flordan “Flo” Bazile was found in a Massachusetts river last Tuesday and is now being mourned by his old UMass Dartmouth classmates.
In an emotional statement written before officials announced his cause of death, the school’s athletic department described him as “hardworking, passionate (and) determined” — not to mention “a champion” and a “great friend.”
A ‘celebration’ of Bazile’s life is now planned for 5pm in the university’s 750-seat auditorium, which is expected to be packed.
Bazile was last seen on campus around 2 a.m. on Jan. 15, officials said — two days after he participated in an event at Tufts University. His body was found in the Acushnet River seven miles away, police said, confirming he committed suicide.
