The Brazilian armed forces are set to bolster security for the Group of 20 summit in Rio de Janeiro next month, Rio’s state secretary for security announced on Tuesday. Brazilian law allows the president to deploy military forces temporarily in specific areas when regular security measures prove inadequate. This action, termed Guarantee of Law and Order, has been previously implemented during major events like the 2014 World Cup, the 2016 Olympics, and the 2012 UN Rio+20 Summit.
Rio de Janeiro’s state security secretary, Victor Santos, confirmed that this measure will be applied for the upcoming G20 meeting, emphasising the host nation’s duty to ensure the safety of all attendees. Prominent figures, including U.S. President Joe Biden and China’s Xi Jinping, have confirmed their presence at the summit scheduled for 18-19 November. Santos specified that the military’s deployment would focus on the city of Rio de Janeiro rather than the entire state.
As of now, neither Brazil’s presidential office nor the defence ministry has commented on Santos’s statement. Recently, Rio de Janeiro has experienced several violent incidents, with hijackers using city buses to barricade streets, impeding police access after releasing passengers.
