Boniface Mwangi has revealed the reason behind activist Hanifa Adan’s decision to deactivate her official X account.
Kenyans on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, woke up to Hanifa’s deactivated account after she had spent the better part of Monday fighting off her critics on the platform.
Hanifa’s X account
Her fans attributed the deactivation of the X account to the criticism she had faced, moments after she condemned one of the Muslim leaders who had argued that people who rape ladies that are dressed improperly would be forgiven by God if they chose to repent.
However, Mwangi has come out to clear the air, stating that the social media bullying Hanifa faced prior to her account deactivation might not have been the reason behind her temporary exit from X.
According to Mwangi, Hanifa has deactivated her X account to take a wellness break, after which she will return to the platform.
“Hanifa deactivated her account to take a wellness break. She will be back after her rest,” Mwangi stated.
Mwangi’s statement came after one of the X users argued that Hanifa had been forced to delete her X account over what he termed as ‘toxic hate from fanatical Muslims incensed by her dressing and selfie.’
“In the end, Hanifa was forced to delete her Twitter X account not because of action by a ‘repressive’ state but because of toxic hate from fanatical Muslims incensed by her dressing and selfie. The obsession to police what women wear is no longer faith; it is pathology,” the X user by the name of Rashid Abdi argued.

Hanifa over the weekend faced criticism after she shared her selfie video that she had taken when she attended an event in which she had won an award.
A section of Muslim netizens argued that she had dressed improperly, going against the Muslim code of dressing for ladies.
In the video she shared, she was not putting on a hijab, thus offending a section of Muslims on the X platform.
Hanifa’s activism
Hanifa came into the limelight after she put on a spirited fight against the bad state of roads in Pipeline Estate in Nairobi, putting Governor Johnson Sakaja on the spot.
She was also active and vocal during the Gen Z-led protests, where she single-handedly ran a fundraising campaign to help the victims of police brutality.
