Blue Beetle is the first film of James Gunn’s new DCU, which is set to unfold over the next decade.

Gunn announced his slate for the big overhaul for the DC Universe in January.

He explained that ‘DC has been disconnected in film and television for a long time.’

‘I have an incredibly deep connection to these characters, to these stories, and to wanting to create that type of magic not only in the kid that I was, but in the connection that I had with my father, with friends later on,’ Gunn explained.

He added: ‘And wanting to create a unified world in DC where we tell stories.’

Gunn mentioned Blue Beetle in his initial announcement and confirmed that he would be integral in the foundation of the new universe.

In a June interview with the Inside of You podcast, Gunn revealed, ‘I mean the first DCU character, for sure, is Blue Beetle.’

While speaking with Total Film, director Angel confirmed, ‘We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future instalments of the DCU, but we are not tied to all the films from the past.’

Even though it may not have had the strongest start in the box office, Blue Beetle has the potential to become a sleeper hit due to the rave audience reviews.
