Luhrmann, who’s best known for his iconic films like Elvis, The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge!, and his Oscar-winning wife purchased the 790 square metre home back in 2017 for $21million before renovating it two years later.

The property, originally built in 1852, boasts six spacious bedrooms, five bathrooms, two powder rooms and five fireplaces.

Luhrmann and Martin’s reason for selling is to return home to Australia and set up their main base.

‘Since the pandemic and making the movie Elvis in Australia, our work has kept us mostly away from our New York City base,’ Luhrmann told New York Post‘s Gimme Shelter.

‘We shot Elvis entirely on the Gold Coast in Queensland and will continue to develop shows to be shot there.

The couple, who have been married for over 26 years, will potentially downsize back home. The filmmaker said they’re ‘becoming empty nesters’ as their children – Lilly, 19, and son William, 18 – get older.

‘Our enormous, beautiful family house seems very quiet without our children,’ Luhrmann added.

The property has a gated street entrance with a front garden, with the front door opening to a red carpet entry hall.

It leads to a large eat-in chef’s kitchen complete with a butler’s pantry and access to the back garden.

The garden boasts an intimate space perfect for entertaining and al-fresco dining. But there is also a formal living and dining room situated at the front of the property that has a wood fireplace.

Up the floating curved staircase is the second floor, known as the parlour floor, which hosts the master bedroom with an ensuite, walk-in closet and a private terrace.

On the third floor, more bedrooms, along with laundry and a sitting room.

The fourth floor now features a casual living room with a bar, gym, a bedroom and one bathroom – with the area being known as Luhrmann’s creative space where he wrote Elvis.

Luhrmann and Martin aren’t the only Aussie couple to list their New York home in the past year.

In June, 2022, Hugh Jackman and his now estranged wife Deborra-Lee Furness listed their $54.2 million five-bedroom triplex that boasts stunning views over the nearby Hudson River.

Jackman, who starred in Luhrmann’s 2008 film Australia, and Furness announced their split after 27 years of marriage.

‘We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth,’ the couple said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

‘Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness,’ it continued.

‘We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.’

Theories began circulating that Hugh and Deborra-Lee had already begun dividing up their property portfolio after they placed their ‘dream’ house on the market for rent back in January.

They also downsized from their $54.2million triplex apartment in New York City to a smaller place in Chelsea.
