Since Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has been such a hit, fans and industry heads are wondering if and when the first in a brand new Mattel series will get a sequel.

The film has been so successful that it is approaching the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. While it is typical of franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars to lock in actors and directors for a certain number of movies, Consequence reports that Gerwig as well as Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling have no deal in place to return for a second movie.

Gerwig’s team was reportedly approached about making a Barbie sequel months ago, but her team held off on any negotiating until after the movie premiered. Now that the writers and actors strikes are going on, who knows when talks about a sequel will resume.

Regardless of whether or not it actually happens, it’s clear that a sequel would be a good idea. Without a contract in place, Gerwig would stand to make tons of money if she agreed to sign on.

Robbie and Gosling could also stand to make a killing from a sequel, however, they could very well choose to return to Barbie Land as only a producer, if at all. It’s important to note that Gosling hasn’t been known for starring in big franchises.

While many will expect a sequel to happen despite these formalities, it’s entirely possible that the film will end up standing on its own. After all, sequels are not always as good as the original film so why ruin something good?
