Bank teller charged with stealing Ksh2.5M

A bank teller has been charged at Milimani Law Courts with stealing Ksh2.5 million.

In a statement, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said the accused, Joseph Musembi Mutuku, was arraigned after investigations established that during his time of employment he purportedly misappropriated funds.

In addition, DPP revealed that Mutuku was employed at Co-operative Bank and was situated at the Masai Mall branch in Rongai.

The prosecution through counsel Judy Koech informed the courts that during Joseph’s tenure a period running between May 2022 and December 2023 it was when the fraud occurred.

“A teller at the Cooperative Bank was today charged at the Milimani Law Courts with stealing Ksh. 2.5 million at the financial institution,” the DPP said.

“Prosecution Counsel Judy Koech, told the court that the accused person, namely Joseph Musembi Mutuku, on diverse dates between 1st May 2022 and 30th December 2023 at the Co-operative Bank Of Kenya Massai Mall Branch in Ongata Rongai within Kajiado county, being an employee of the said bank, stole the amount which came to his possession by virtue of employment.”

Teller pleads not guilty

Despite the accusations, Joseph pleaded not guilty before Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe. 

The magistrate ruled that Joseph would be released on a Ksh500,000 bail with a similar surety or a Ksh300,000 cash bail with two contact people.

Further, the court outlined that the case was scheduled for mention and would be heard on July 25, 2024.
