It seems like Netflix is up to some major monkey (or, technically, ape) business.
According to Axios, Netflix will launch Baby Gorilla Cam — a two-hour livestream showcasing the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s gorilla troop — tomorrow, Sept. 7. The series will take place every Thursday at 10 a.m. ET throughout the month of September.
A press release featured on Netflix’s Tudum reports that the Baby Gorilla Cam “will capture an adult male (Mokolo), four adult females (Kebi Moyo, Fredrika, Nneka, and Tusa), and two babies (Kayembe and a yet-to-be-named female newborn).”
Additionally, viewers have the opportunity to nominate and vote on names for the newborn gorilla via the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s official Instagram account (@clemetzoo). Voting will conclude on Sept. 12 at midnight ET, and the winning name will be announced during the second livestream episode, which will take place on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. ET.
The teaser video shared on the zoo’s Instagram page features a snippet that says “help name our baby,” and lists the following three names: Kunda (“Love”), Komera (“Strong”), and Isukari (“Sweet”).
“We can’t wait for people from all around the world to get to know our dynamic gorilla troop and elevate the work that’s being done to save this critically endangered species,” Cleveland Metroparks Zoo executive director Dr. Chris Kuhar told Netflix. “In addition, this opportunity is a celebration of our newest member of the troop, and we look forward to seeing what name viewers choose.”
Netflix urges prospective viewers to “prepare for squeal-inducing levels of adorable.” But don’t fret if your boss won’t let you off of work to watch the gorillas in real time — each episode will be available on demand following the livestream.
