Aussies slam the Logies and claim 'ego stroking' awards show proves free-to-air TV is dead – as they name the night's worst offender

A fierce internet debate has sparked over the relevance of the TV Week Logie Awards.

On Monday, a poster started a thread on Reddid titled ‘why does anyone care about the Logies?’

The post began with ‘Serious question: why does anyone give a sh*t who wins anything at the Logies?’

‘I mean Sonia won the top prize and she just hosts some sh*tty reality shows,’ it continued, referring to Sonia Kruger and her Gold Logie win.

The irritated redditor had plenty more to say, suggesting that ‘Free-to-air is going down the gurgler big time and all these cardboard “celebs” dress up to the nines and smile for the camera like everything is going great.’

‘Even free-to-air’s saving grace of sport is so subpar now that people don’t mind paying for Fox just because the coverage is so bad on Channel Nine and Channel Seven.’

Within 24 hours, the thread had accumulated over 650 comments, many of which echoed the original post’s sentiments.

One commenter claimed ‘only the TV channels care about the Logies. It’s nothing but an ego stroking exercise for worn out wannabe actors’ to which another replied ‘so it’s LinkedIn except for TV shows.’

Another post in the thread suggested ‘the only people who care are those attending the awards. It’s a circle jerk like any other celebrity awards, Logies just happens to be especially d-list and trashy.’

Meanwhile, Aussies on Twitter were likewise not impressed, with many television personalities getting slammed for their contributions to Australian TV’s night of nights.

‘If Tina Sparkle is the most popular person on Australian TV, it’s over,’ tweeted one disgruntled Twitter user, referring to Kruger’s character in Strictly Ballroom.

But the Gold Logie winner wasn’t the only one to come in for some criticism.

Dave Hughes ‘time as a comedian is long gone’ opined one tweet.

‘He is still as unfunny and self-obsessed as always,’ one tweet read, while many more expressed their dissatisfaction and distaste for the former Hey Hey It’s Saturday Host.

Another called the TV host a ‘national embarrassment’.

During its run, Hey Hey It’s Saturday had its share of controversy.

Last year, TV veteran Daryl was called out for performing Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World in blackface back on the show, in the 1980s.

Another incident in 2009 involved a comedy troupe dressed up as the Jackson Five in blackface for Hey Hey’s regular Red Faces segment.

American singer Harry Connick Jr. was a guest judge on the episode and gave the performance a score of zero, saying that he never would’ve appeared on the show if he had known that it would involve blackface.

Host Daryl apologised to Harry at the end of the live segment at the time, saying: ‘I think we may have offended you with that act and I deeply apologise on behalf of all of us.

‘Because I know that to your countrymen, that’s an insult to have a blackface routine like that on the show, so I do apologise to you.’

Harry responded: ‘I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons that when we see something like that we take it really to heart.

‘I feel like I am at home here and if I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably, I definitely, wouldn’t have.’

Meanwhile, Channel Seven scored a major win in the Sunday night ratings thanks to their telecast of the 2023 Logie Awards.

TV’s night of nights, hosted by funnyman Sam Pang, pulled in 877,000 metro viewers for the network.

It was a major success for the network after they snatched up the broadcast rights to the Logies from Channel Nine last year.

Still, Seven’s ratings numbers were not quite what the network would have hoped for after Nine managed to score an impressive 885,000 viewers for the 2022 broadcast.

The Logies had been an institution at Nine for six decades and many of its stars, including the late Bert Newton, were strongly linked to the event.
