Veteran Gospel artiste Daddy Owen has challenged unity promoters to also address justice for the victims of police brutality during the ongoing anti-government protests.
Taking to his official X account, Owen asked those who were responsible for erecting billboards around Nairobi County that aim at promoting unity and peace in the country should also prominently call for justice.
Owen added that it is hypocrisy to promote peace and unity without addressing justice.
The ‘Vanity’ hitmaker further suggested that the faces of those who were murdered, injured, and abducted by the police during the protests should also be displayed on the billboards.
“Whoever is erecting these billboards around Nairobi should ensure that the word ‘justice’ is also prominently displayed. Alternatively, why not feature the faces of the more than 50 young people who were shot, killed, or abducted? The hypocrisy of promoting peace without addressing justice could be detrimental to this nation,” he said.
Slain protesters
On Thursday, July 25, 2024, human rights activists, youths, and families of the victims of those killed during the anti-government protests marched in the streets of Nairobi to honour their memories.
Dressed in white and black, the peaceful protesters laid flowers along the streets to honour more than 50 people who have died so far since the protests began a month ago.
The families of the slain protestors and the human rights activists demanded justice, accusing the police of using excessive force to control demonstrations.
Call for unity
On Sunday, July 28, 2024, President William Ruto called for national unity amid anti-government protests and criticism after nominating members of the opposition in the new cabinet.
Speaking during a church service in Taita Taveta County, Ruto emphasized that the current crisis in the country calls for unity and collaboration.
“I urge all Kenyans to come together in this season of unity for the betterment of our country; every situation has its season, and this is the right time for us to unite, collaborate, and work together,” Ruto said.
Ruto defended his recent decision to include four senior members of the ODM party in his government, describing it as a crucial step towards fostering national development.
He stated that the inclusion of the members of the ODM party in his new cabinet aimed at fostering national development, adding that the support from opposition members would strengthen the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“We will have a better country than the one we have now if we can unite all Kenyans and work together to plan our nation’s development, ” he said.
