Apple TV+ has canceled crime drama City on Fire after just one season. According to Deadline, the streamer has opted not to renew the series for Season 2.
Although Apple has not yet provided a reason for the cancellation, all signs point to the show not meeting viewership expectations. Season 1 of the series just ended its eight-episode run on June 16.
Based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, the series centers on the investigation of a murder of a woman who turns out to be connected to a series of mysterious citywide fires, the downtown music scene, and a wealthy uptown real estate family with many secrets.
City on Fire was created by The O.C.’s Josh Schwartz alongside Nancy Drew’s Stephanie Savage and debuted its first three episodes on May 12.
The series stars Wyatt Oleff and Chase Sui Wonders, in addition to Jemima Kirke, Nico Tortorella, Ashley Zukerman, Xavier Clyde, Max Milner, Alexandra Doke, Omid Abtahi, Kathleen Munroe and John Cameron Mitchell.
The show’s axing is just one of many streaming cancellations in recent weeks. Hulu announced that its musical rom-com Up Here has been canceled less than a week ago. Netflix had also canceled its planned film Master of the Universe starring Kyle Allen (West Side Story) in mid-July.
Season 1 of City on Fire is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
