‘Amazin’ But True’ Podcast Episode 159: Can Mets Turn Season Around in July?

Stop the presses.

The Mets have a winning streak. The Mets have won a series.

For the first time in over a month, the Mets have won two games in a row and have taken a series.

They did so against the San Francisco Mets, I mean Giants, over the weekend, taking down J.D. Davis, Wilmer Flores and an injured Michael Conforto.

While the Mets are still way out of the playoff race and eight games under .500, it’s a step in the right direction and a minor hurdle this team needed to get over.

Maybe the calendar change did it for Buck Showalter’s squad? The June swoon was real, but maybe the Mets ride a “July high?”

To talk about the series win in Queens and look ahead to the West Coast trip, we bring you a brand new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:

  • WINNING STREAK: It took a month, but it was nice to see the Mets string back-to-back wins together. It didn’t start well after blowing a 4-2 lead Friday and losing 5-4, but they turned it around. Justin Verlander pitched well. David Peterson was solid, but was pulled way too early. The bats showed some pop all weekend. Tommy Pham is the hottest hitter in baseball right now.
  • BRIGHAM/BULLPEN: Is it time for the Mets to send Jeff Brigham down or give him a phantom IL trip? He’s pitched more already this year than he has in his career in a single season. His ERA has gone up two runs since the beginning of June. He looks gassed and the Mets may need to give him a break to get right. Should we be worried about David Robertson after blowing the game Friday?
  • MAURICIO: When will see finally see Ronny Mauricio? Having Danny Mendick over him on the roster does not make much sense. He could provide the spark to the team like Elly De La Cruz did for the Reds. The Mets need that jolt of youth infusion as the oldest roster.
  • IT’S TIME: This is it. You won a couple in a row. Now it’s time to go on a run and get to .500. If there’s any shot at turning the season around, it is now before you decide on being buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. A strong few weeks can get you back in the wild-card picture.
  • NELSON FIGUEROA SPANISH ACADEMY: Figgie teaches me how to say “fireworks,” “4th of July,” “July win streak” and “cocoa butter” in Spanish.
