Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has called on countries to build their own AI infrastructure “as fast as you can” to reap the economic benefits as quickly as possible.
Huang says the fear around AI is driven by “interests in scaring people” and that regulating AI will be no more difficult than regulating other historic innovations such as cars and airplanes.
By encouraging countries to build their own AI infrastructure, Huang says they will not only reap the economic benefits, but also protect their own individual cultures.
AI scaremongering or valid concerns?
Nvidia has seen its share value reach new heights thanks to its pioneering development and sales of AI chips, with Huang pushing for countries to take advantage of the rapid increase in AI computing efficiency for the benefit of their own economies.
“The rest is really up to you to take initiative, activate your industry and build the infrastructure as quickly as you can,” Huang said. “You can’t let other people do that.”
“There are some interests in trying to scare people about this new technology, to mystify this technology, to encourage other people not to do anything about that technology and to trust them to do it. And I think that’s a mistake is.”
AI regulation has been high on the agenda of many countries over the past year, with both companies and governments signing legislation and agreements to protect themselves and others from potential misuse of the technology.
Nvidia has had some of its advanced AI computer chips blocked by US export controls amid concerns that the Chinese government wants to use the technology to boost its military capabilities. However, Huang did not discuss this issue at the World Government Summit.
