Acclaimed Kenyan actor and screenwriter, Abel Mutua, popularly known as Mkurugenzi, opened up about the driving force behind his exceptional parenting skills.
Speaking to Oga Obinna, the entertainer shared how his difficult childhood, marked by the absence of a father figure, motivated him to break the cycle and become a dedicated and involved father.
“At some point, my dad decided… he left us, but God ni msoo tulikam tukapata dad mwingine baadaye when I was a bit older,” he recalled.
He admitted that during the period without a father figure, he had been a stubborn and undisciplined child.
“But during this time when we didn’t have a dad, kuna some fundamentals tulimiss tu, and I was very chicky. By the time I was going to high school, nilikua mtoi useless, kuna moulding tu I missed from a father figure,” the thespian revealed.
His father leaving deeply impacted Mutua’s upbringing, compelling him to break the cycle and ensure that history would not repeat itself when he became a father.
“So nikasema this cycle I’m breaking it, I won’t raise a bastard, lazima nistep in,” he firmly stated.
Mutua also revealed that his mother’s passing when his little sister was just ten years old, forced him to step up as a parental figure for her.
This experience further solidifies why his great parental skills that everyone keep talking about on the internet.
“Sa amebaki apo na mzae, PS zimekam my sisters wote wameenda, so through those experiences zikaniteach you need to create an environment where your daughter, son ako very easy and comfortable to talk with you, coz you need to be in the know when anything happens. So sahii that’s why we are very intentional when it comes to raising our daughter,” he concluded.

In a past interview, the thespian gave parents a few tips for exceptional parenthood noting that one ought to establish a friendship with his or her child.
“We have some respect because she knows she cannot lie to me. We have a working formula. Being a child’s friend, create a friendly environment with a child,” Abel said.
Despite the nature of his work, he said he tries to create an environment where she is safe since she is still a minor.
“We are monitoring everything, her tablet has YouTube kids and when she downloads anything we get email notifications,” he said.
