Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has condemned the increased cases of insecurity in the country.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, Onyonka said that cases of abductions and mistreatment of Kenyans should stop and that fundamental rights and freedoms must be observed and respected.
“The bad habits like abductions and mistreatment of our people that we have carried from the past should stop, the fundamental rights and freedoms in our progressive 2010 Constitution must be observed and respected for us to have a just, peaceful and law-abiding country!” he wrote on his X account.
While speaking during a live TV interview on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, Onyonka stated that abductions and killings that are currently being witnessed in the country happened in previous administrations which made Kenyans rise and bring in a constitution that respects human rights, freedom and democracy.
In addition, the senator added that picketing is a constitutional right and a way in which Kenyans vent out without necessarily wanting to overthrow the ruling government.
“This is what worries me the young people of this country who are aged 25 up to 30 years may not have known or remember what happened, what is happening here at the national level happened before and some of the events which made Kenyans rise and bring in a constitution that respects human rights, civil rights and make sure every Kenyan had freedom,” he said.
“Demonstrating and disagreeing with the government is one of the ways in which you allow the public to vent without necessarily wanting to throw away the government.”
Onyonka on speaking up
Onyonka went on to disclose that speaking up about increased cases of insecurity is not trying to tarnish the government’s reputation.
“We are not trying to tarnish the government’s reputation, we are just stating facts. Young people are disappearing some of them are being found and being tracked down, arrested, and killed for participating in the Gen-Z protests,” Onyonka said during the interview.
