Five police officers from Gigiri Police Station were on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, arraigned at Milimani Law Courts after they were arrested in connection with the escape of 13 detainees.
Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in a statement issued via X platform said the officers are persons of interest in the case that involves the disappearance of 12 Eritrean nationals and Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in the k******s of p****e whose b********************d at a dumpsite in Kware in Pipeline, Embakasi South Sub-County.
Identities of police officers
The five police officers are Ronald Babo, Evans Kipkirui, Mollent Achieng, Zachary Nyabuto and Gerald Mutuku.
They were presented before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi.
“Five police officers have been arraigned at Milimani Court in connection with the escape of 13 remandees from custody at the Gigiri police station in Nairobi. They are Ronald Babo, Evans Kipkirui, Mollent Achieng, Zachary Nyabuto and Gerald Mutuku.
“The officers are persons of interest in the case that involves the disappearance of 12 Eritrean nationals and Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in the murder of several p****e whose bodies were recovered in Kware, a low-income residential area in Nairobi. They appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi,” the ODPP statement reads.

Gigiri Police Station on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, became a scene of crime when it emerged that the 13 detainees, among them Jumaisi who was set to be arraigned in court on Friday this week, had escaped under unclear circumstances.
Police officers interdicted
As a result, acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli announced that eight police officers, among them the OCPD and Gigiri Police Station OCS, had been interdicted.
Masengeli attributed the daring escape of the detainees to an inside job and promised that a thorough investigation had commenced and anyone found culpable would face the full force of law.
The 12 Eritreans that escaped alongside Jumaisi had been arrested for being in the country illegally.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders, considering that officers were deployed accordingly at the station. Consequently, I have interdicted eight officers who were on duty last night, among them the Gigiri Sub-County Police Commander, OCS Gigiri Police Station, duty officer, duty NCO, and station guards in reports office personnel,” Masengeli said.
