Kiama’s arrest was widely criticized after videos surfaced showing him being handled roughly by police. The footage depicts several officers interrogating him while he is on his knees before being placed in handcuffs.

Kiama’s brother, who goes by @tants_arts on X, clarified that the teenager was not participating in the protests. “He was sent to buy lunch and got arrested as he was going about his business,” he stated.

The brother condemned the police treatment, emphasizing that Kiama who is a student was unfairly targeted.

The arrest drew significant public attention, with many social media users using the hashtag #FreeKiama to advocate for his release.

Others threatened to walk to Mlolongo Police Station where he was detained to advocate for his release.

The brother thanked those who supported their cause and criticized the system for prosecuting a minor. “Why is my brother, a student, facing court charges instead of being in school for his exams?” he questioned.

President William Ruto addressed the issue on July 24, instructing that all protesters wrongfully detained should be released and have their charges dropped.

“Criminal justice agencies should ensure that those caught up in the protests by mistake are released and not held accountable,” Ruto said.
