FromSoftware finally decided solo players deserve a chance at surviving Elden Ring Nightreign’s punishing boss fights.
Nightreign is built for three-player chaos, but soloing it can be painfully rough. Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op roguelike designed for trios. Bosses hit like trucks and expect teamwork.
Solo mode is optional but real. You set “Expedition Type” to “Single” before leaving Roundtable Hold. No teammates. Just you and the Nightlords.
Solo runs scale slightly, less enemy health, mostly, but that’s not enough. Without teammates to revive you or share the load, you’re slower to progress, easier to kill, and likely under-leveled for every major fight.
Patch 1.02 gives you an extra revive and more rune drops
But the solo experience is about to get easier with Patch 1.02, which FromSoftware just announced through X.
“Next week, Patch 1.02 will be released and will include several bug fixes as well as improvements for solo expeditions. Further details will be provided next week.”
Though we don’t have the details yet, we have a bit of information on what’s coming. You now revive once during each night boss battle. It’s automatic; no spell, no item, no begging.
Rune drops were also increased. Finally, solo players can grind a little less and fight a little more.
Nightreign has patched before, before launch, even. Patch 1.01 hit ahead of release. Welcome to modern gaming, where your disc is outdated before you install it.
That pre-launch patch was vague. “Improved handling,” “balance adjustments,” and other PR speak.
Still, solo play may have gotten slightly easier then, too. Early feedback hinted at reduced enemy HP and maybe stronger solo stats. But changes were subtle.
FromSoft listened, though. Patch 1.02 clearly addresses solo concerns, before most players even touched the game.
Despite bumps, Nightreign is a win. Not having a duo mode was annoying to some players, and the PC framerate stutters were frustrating to others.
But the game is thriving anyway. Player interest is high. Devs are responsive. And the bones of Elden Ring still grip hard. Nightreign isn’t perfect, but it’s another grim, beautiful success.
