Dragon Age: The Veilguard actor claims “bad people on the internet” rooted for it to fail

Alix Wilton Regan, the actress behind the Female Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Veilguard, has blasted “bad people on the internet”, claiming there were many rooting for the latest installment to fail before it even launched.

There’s no beating around the bush when it comes to Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Although it broke records for EA, it quickly became the focal point of major controversy for a litany of reasons.

Having been perceived as a “woke” video game, in many respects due to its LGBTQ+ representation, The Veilguard was put through the ringer. Its Metacritic user score alone completely tanked and hasn’t recovered, with thousands leaving negative scores. It got so bad, in fact, Metacritic even stepped in to remove “racist, sexist, and homophobic” ratings.

Now, half a year removed from its fiery release, a lead actor has spoken up in defense of the sequel. Alix Wilton Regan, who brought the Female Inquisitor to life, is convinced ‘bad actors’ across social media “wanted to see it fail.”

The Veilguard was subject to review bombing at launch.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard actor fires back at people ‘wanting’ to see it fail

Obviously being close with those at BioWare who made the games she worked on, Wilton Regan was confident The Veilguard would be a “really strong game. I thought it was just BioWare [doing] more BioWare,” she told IGN.

Before the game even made it out the door, however, there was plenty of contention surrounding it. Be it for its visuals, its writing, or the like, there was a great deal of chatter from thousands who were yet to play it themselves. It’s for this reason, Wilton Regan believes the game was doomed.

“I think a lot of people kind of wanted to see it fail, or wanted to see [BioWare] fail,” she stressed. “Either because they’re just really bad people on the internet, of which there are unfortunately many, as we have discovered.

“People were attacking the game before it was released. It’s ridiculous. How can you judge a game, a book, a film, a TV show before it’s actually released? You can’t. It’s an idiotic stance to take.”

After its public release, with many predisposed to not like The Veilguard, according to Wilton Regan, the situation only got worse. It left the actress “absolutely devastated for BioWare.”

Mass Effect 5 trailer

Up next for BioWare is a new Mass Effect game. Can they win fans back over?

Months after The Veilguard’s release, layoffs hit the studio to the point the team now reportedly has a headcount in the double digits.

Up next is a return to the Mass Effect franchise. It’s been 13 years since Commander Shepard’s trilogy came to an end, and eight years since Mass Effect: Andromeda failed to make much of an impact.

Only time will tell how social media will react to the next BioWare project on the back of The Veilguard’s rocky trajectory.
