Youth protestor Immaculate Nekesa popularly known as ‘Ashley Magero’ who went viral during the anti-finance bill demonstrations in June 2024 was reportedly found dead in her room by classmates from Sigalagala Polytechnic two days after she tragically suffocated from a burning jiko stove.

This incident marks the fourth student death at Sigalagala Polytechnic since its reopening. The community is grappling with grief over these losses. Otieno shared,

“Yesterday, we laid our lecturer to rest. We’re heartbroken and praying for strength.”

The school community faces challenges, especially following recent protests against a controversial finance bill that led to multiple fatalities among young activists.

Nekesa actively participated in these protests, which have drawn significant attention across Kenya. Her commitment to social issues makes her untimely death even more impactful within the student community.
