David Lynch had been developing a new limited series for Netflix before he died – and there’s a chance we may be able to read his final script in the future.
The legendary director died on January 16. He was renowned for his surreal, often extraordinary work, whether it’s Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, or pretty much anything else in his decades-spanning filmography.
While his last film was released in 2006 (Inland Empire), he created a black-and-white short film for Netflix in 2017: What Did Jack Do, in which a detective (played by Lynch) interrogates a monkey.
Lynch was working on a new “mystery” series for Netflix, and while it’ll probably never be made, his family wants his fans to be able to read it.
David Lynch’s final script could be released
In an interview with The Times, his daughter Jennifer Lynch said: “None of us ever tried to make his series in his place.
“We are considering offering that as a published piece, so that people can sit with his ideas. It would be very sad if people didn’t get to see it.”
She also said Kyle MacLachlan (who starred in Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, and Dune) had been cast in the series, “but not officially.”
“I was sworn to secrecy but yes, I’m sure Kyle would have been part of it. And Laura [Dern], and Naomi [Watts]. He loved to play with his friends,” Jennifer added.
The series was titled Unrecorded Night, and according to earlier reports, it had been canceled due to the pandemic.
As per Deadline, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said he’ll “always wonder about what [Lynch] had in mind for us with what would have been his last project.”
“It was a David Lynch production, so filled with mystery and risks but we wanted to go on this creative ride with this genius. First Covid, then some health uncertainties lead to this project never being produced but we made it clear that as soon as he was able, we were all in.”
It’s unclear when or how Lynch’s final script will be released.
