Dangerous Animals ending explained, plus director discusses sequel plans

Dangerous Animals is a new horror movie about a serial killer who feeds his victims to sharks. Here’s how that twisted tale concludes, plus director Sean Byrne on potential sequel plans.

Dangerous Animals is a ridiculously entertaining new horror movie that plays like a cross between Longlegs and Jaws.

We gave the movie 4 stars, and wrote in our Dangerous Animals review that “during a period filled with bloated blockbusters weighed down by exposition and overstuffed ensembles, Dangerous Animals is the exact opposite; a simple, straightforward horror romp that’s as lean and mean as the killing machines at its core.”

We spoke to the movie’s director about the film’s conservation message, the scene that made his leading lady faint, and the influence of Shane Warne and Steve Irwin on the villain. Below is a breakdown of the ending and potential sequel news, meaning SPOILERS ahead…

Dangerous Animals ending explained

Dangerous Animals becomes a game of cat and mouse between serial killer Tucker and potential victim Zephyr, as she tries to save herself and her love interest, Moses, from being fed to the sharks.

The climax takes place on Tucker’s boat, and begins when Zephyr escapes from handcuffs by biting off her thumb. She then fires a flare at Tucker, and they fight in the boat’s kitchen, with Zephyr smacking him around the head with a frying pan.

She then makes another break for it, swimming to a nearby island resort. But Tucker catches up in a speedboat, and following a struggle on the beach, he renders her unconscious and once again takes her hostage.

Tucker then suspends Zephyr over the ocean while helpless Moses is made to watch while tied up. What looks to be a Great White shark swims at Zephyr and she kicks and pokes it with a spear, which she then uses to climb back towards the boat. But Zephyr falls into the water, and sharks head for the blood that’s seeping from the hole in her hand.

She stays still however, the sharks leave her alone, and Zephyr climbs back onboard the boat, where she grabs a harpoon gun, says the somewhat dubious callback line “Oobie Doobie motherf***er,” and shoots Tucker in the stomach.

Tucker duly falls into the water, and a Great White takes him up in the air and then back down, with his apparent death caught on one of the killer’s own cameras.

The shark then swims away with Tucker, but the harpoon rope gets caught around Zephyr’s ankle and whisks her into the water. Zephyr is a fighter however, and she breaks free, resurfaces, and makes it back to the boat.

Zephyr then sets off a flare that a nearby party boat spots, then sees to Moses, who appears to be dead. Which is a bummer for Zephyr, as having previously thought there was nothing for her on land, she admits that now there’s something… him.

Moses regains consciousness at this point, says “I knew it!” and they both smile at each other as the credits roll.

Dangerous Animals director has “other angles” for sequel

Zephyr stuck in the water in Dangerous Animals.

We spoke to Dangerous Animals director Sean Byrne about the film’s ending, and if Tucker is really dead, but he wouldn’t be drawn on that subject.

As for sequel plans however, Byrne says: “There’s other angles. It’s been loosely talked about. At this point I take any of those questions more as good-will and jokes than reality because the film hasn’t come out yet.

“But I hope there’s an audience for it because I love shark films and I love serial killer films and I haven’t seen that fusion before. And also I think it’s a good night at the movies. It’s got breakneck speed and it’s also a love story and an action movie – we tried to tick a lot of boxes and keep it all in balance and make it as satisfying for an audience as possible.”

So no definitive answer, but it’s clear that if Dangerous Animals is a hit, Byrne has ideas for where the story could go next.
