Since starring as Ariel in the May 2023 premiere of Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid, Halle Bailey has gained widespread recognition.
Following the $500 million worldwide box office success of the film, Halle, 23, has become a much sought-after actress. She will be the lead in the upcoming musical adaptation of The Color Purple, which will hit theaters on December 25 in the United States.
The Disney actress established herself as a formidable presence even prior to her recognition for her acting abilities. She and her sister Chloe were signed to Beyoncé’s record company at the age of 16 after being discovered by the superstar singer on YouTube. While Bailey — who rose to fame as a young singer alongside her sister Chloe Bailey — first stumbled across DDG’s videos in 2015, she soon “forgot about him.” She added to the outlet: “But then I saw that he was dropping music, and I really gravitated toward this one song. Coincidentally he messaged me — and the rest is history.”
The Grown-ish alum and the “Moonwalking in Calabasas” performer first sparked dating speculation in January 2022 when they were spotted together at Usher’s Las Vegas residency. Nearly two months later, DDG made their romance Instagram official.
Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., aka PontiacMadeDDG, was born on October 26 1997, in Pontiac, Michigan.
According to People Magazine, DDG graduated from International Tech Academy as a valedictorian – an academic title awarded to the highest-performing student of the class.
The outstanding honour had been a source of inspiration for his debut album, Valedictorian, released in 2019.
During the album’s release, the rapper had told BET.com of his enthusiasm to succeed: ‘Academics are very important, because I was really into school. That’s what a lot of people don’t realise.
‘Valedictorian is just about being super competitive and being at the top at all times. It displays my competitiveness. I want to be valedictorian of everything – definitely of the rap game.’
DDG further enrolled at Central Michigan University, but later dropped out and moved to Hollywood, California to pursue a career in entertainment after making $30,000 a month being a YouTuber.
Forbes report that DDG went on to establish himself as a music artist, and founded his own own label, Zooted Music, in 2020. Actress Halle Bailey and Darryl Dwayne “DDG” Grandberry Jr. first met through their respective careers.
“I’ve been a fan of his for years,” the Little Mermaid actress gushed to Essence in November 2022 of her rapper beau. “I grew up being on YouTube and would always see the young Black creators and was constantly inspired by them. He was one of them.”
