The first official trailer for Timothée Chalamet’s take on Willy Wonka’s candy-loving factory owner, “Wonka,” has been released by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The trailer depicts a young Willy Wonka establishing his chocolate empire, teasing territorial disputes with candy cartels and the origins of the spectacular, magical candy that made his chocolate factory so unique.
The beloved character is based on Roald Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” in which a young boy goes on a tour and eventually inherits the chocolate factory from Wonka. Willy Wonka was first played by the late Gene Wilder in 1971, and Johnny Depp followed suit in 2005.
Wonka teases fantastical adventures in his past in the book and subsequent big-screen portrayals by Wilder and Depp, including trips to the home of the Oompa-Loompa people. In the films, the orange-skinned, green-haired workers can be seen dancing and singing biting songs about the tour participants.
The new movie trailer only shows one Oompa-Loompa, played by Hugh Grant, who begins dancing while trapped in a glass jar.
However, a brief shot at the beginning of the teaser may provide a first glimpse of their homeland, where Wonka obtains his special chocolate, which can cause people to float, inflate, or otherwise defy the laws of physics.
Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, and Olivia Colman co-star with Chalamet and Grant. The film will also feature Natasha Rothwell, Rich Fulcher, Rakhee Thakrar, Tom Davis, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
“Wonka” will be released in theaters on December 15, 2023.
