FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A viral Facebook video is showing what appears to be details of last night’s officer-involved shooting.

The video posted to Facebook starts with a Fort Wayne Police Officer standing in front of a red car at the intersection of John St and Hurd St.

A witness to the event who claimed to have taken the video is heard in the video telling the officer he is recording. While the officer is telling the person recording to stay back.

The person recording is seen in the video walking towards the vehicle while telling the person inside the red vehicle to “put your hands up” repeatedly.

The officer is next heard saying “Don’t reach for the [explenitive], don’t [explenitive] dare.” While the individual recording the video continuously tells the person inside the red vehicle to “put your hands up.”

Seconds later the video shows the officer firing his gun twice at the individual inside the red car.

WANE 15 has reached out to FWPD to ask if they are aware of the video regarding last night’s incident. WANE 15 has submitted a formal public request for footage from the shooting to the Fort Wayne Police Department and the City of Fort Wayne.

In a press release sent about the incident this morning, FWPD Public Information Officer Adam Shotzman said “Actions from the occupants inside the vehicle caused the officer to discharge their weapon.”

Shotzman references occupants in the release but it is unknown how many occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

FWPD also said the officer who initiated the traffic stop was not injured. While the man shot was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died.

The victim’s identity has not been released, it will be following an autopsy by the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

Per FWPD policy, that officer has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.
