The two activists have been arrested

UK police apprehended two women on Wednesday, June 19, following an incident where environmental activists sprayed an orange substance on Stonehenge, the renowned prehistoric UNESCO world heritage site in southwest England.

The protest group Just Stop Oil stated that two activists had “decorated Stonehenge in orange powder paint” as a call for Britain’s next government to legally commit to phasing out fossil fuels by 2030.

Videos shared on social media showed activists clad in “Just Stop Oil”-branded T-shirts, using a small canister to spray the orange substance on a cluster of the ancient standing stones. The group identified the activists as Niamh Lynch, a 21-year-old student, and Rajan Naidu, aged 73, specifying that they employed “orange cornflour” for the protest, asserting that the substance would naturally dissipate with rainfall.

English Heritage, the custodian of Stonehenge, expressed concern over the incident and stated that their experts were assessing “the extent of the damage” to the stones, some of which date back approximately 5,000 years.

In response to the incident, Wiltshire Police released a statement confirming the arrest of two women “on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument.” The statement indicated ongoing investigations in collaboration with English Heritage.

The incident occurred amidst the campaigning for a general election scheduled for July 4 and drew strong condemnation from leaders of Britain’s major political parties. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described it as “a disgraceful act of vandalism to one of the UK’s and the world’s oldest and most important monuments.” He criticised Just Stop Oil, stating, “Just Stop Oil should be ashamed of their activists.”

Just Stop Oil, established in 2022, advocates for halting new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. The group has been involved in numerous protests aimed at disrupting various aspects of daily life and has faced significant legal consequences, including arrests and imprisonment for many activists.
