The untimely death of 16-year-old Dagny “Nex” Benedict on Feb. 8 has left a community grappling with grief and a multitude of unanswered questions. Benedict’s passing came on the heels of a physical altercation at Owasso High School West Campus on Feb. 7, prompting intensified scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Owasso Police Department (OPD) reported that they were not informed of the altercation until after the parents brought it to their attention. A school resource officer gathered details at the hospital where Benedict was being treated, but the OPD emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to determine any potential link between the fight and the tragic death.
Authorities are cautious in attributing the cause of death to the school altercation, stating that they are also exploring the possibility of an unrelated medical issue. The state medical examiner is expected to play a crucial role in shedding light on the final cause and manner of Benedict’s demise.
