The biggest domestic opening weekend for a movie this year was achieved by Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which earned $155M at the domestic box office this past weekend. Additionally, this is the largest opening weekend for a female director in history.
This will be the first year in Hollywood history where a single female directed the top-grossing film, provided Greta Gerwig’s Barbie continues to have the biggest domestic opening for a movie for the remainder of 2023.
Barbie made an additional $120 million overseas, bringing its worldwide box office total to $275 million on a $145 million budget, according to Insider. The publication reports Barbie had an estimated marketing budget of $100 million, implying that the film has already made its money back.
‘OPPENHEIMER’ grossed $80 million in its first weekend at the domestic box office, making it the most successful debut for an original Christopher Nolan film ever. On a $100 million budget, the film grossed more than $175 million worldwide.
Barbenheimer’s opening weekend totals cement its place in history as the fourth largest box office weekend in history. Despite the fact that the two blockbuster films debuted on the same day, it appears that they coexisted perfectly.
According to the Associated Press, 200,000 people purchased same-day tickets to “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” according to a National Association of Theater Owners survey.
‘MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING – PART ONE,’ starring Tom Cruise, earns $19.5 million in its second domestic weekend, a 65% drop. The film grossed $370 million worldwide while having a massive $291 million budget, which does not include the film’s marketing budget.
In its fourth weekend of release, “Sound of Freedom” earned $18.8 million from 3,285 theaters. The low-budget film about child sex trafficking has grossed $124 million, making it the year’s 14th highest-grossing domestic release.
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” by Disney rounded out the top five, grossing $6.7 million from 2,885 locations. After four weeks in theaters, Harrison Ford’s action-adventure film has grossed $159 million domestically and $335 million worldwide on a $300 million budget.
