A family mourning the death of 23-year-old Starquan Washington on Friday night is honoring him by remembering the mark he left on their hearts.

Washington was shot and killed early last week outside a bar in the Myrtle Beach area. Horry County police and the coroner’s office confirmed the shooting happened outside Barfield’s Bar and Grille near the intersection of the Highway 17 Bypass and Palmetto Point Boulevard. The family came together to remember and remember the 23-year-old and shed light on who he was as a person and a father.

“Star Springs was a forgiver and his heart was so pure. He always had a smile on his face. Always,” said Washington’s mother, Jamela Shortel Washington, and his aunt, Cassandra S. Trothers said.

Police arrested Kvon Lawhorn in connection with the shooting. Washington’s family claims he was his best friend for a decade.

They say they want more to be done to combat violence in our communities to prevent tragedies like Washington’s death.

Washington’s relatives, meanwhile, viewed him not only as a good friend but as someone they could always turn to in times of crisis.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Horry County Coroner’s Office identified Staquan Washington as one of the victims of Wednesday night’s shooting.

Incident reports from Horry County police and the coroner’s office confirmed the shooting occurred on Frontage Road along the Highway 17 Bypass. Now, after Washington’s death, his family is working to save his memory.

Christopher Glenn said he only knew Washington for a few months in high school before making a discovery that would change both of their lives forever.

“He was very close to my family because he hung out and saw each other all the time. I later found out that he was actually related to me because he was my cousin. But we basically had a cousin relationship. The camaraderie. Star Springs has always been my brother,” Glenn said. “From the moment I met him, I knew he would be my brother. Star Springs was always there.”

While questions remain about the cause of Wednesday’s shooting, Glenn said he hopes others put aside speculation and mourn a young life filled with hope but too short.
