Mariotti was snorkeling off the coast when a shark attacked him, tearing his clothes and inflicting severe injuries. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he managed to pull out his GoPro camera and started recording himself.

As Mariotti swam towards the shore, bleeding and undoubtedly in shock, he urgently pleaded for assistance. “I started this video a few moments after the last bite. I wanted to say goodbye. I never thought I’d survive that monster,” he wrote on Instagram, emphasizing the severity of the encounter. In the video, he can be heard begging a friend on the shore to help pull him out of the water.

The consequences of the attack were severe, with Mariotti losing half of his right leg and sustaining bites to his left. The fear of another attack lingered, as he expressed being “really afraid” that the shark might strike again.

Martin Kelly, a senior operations supervisor with the Queensland Ambulance Service, highlighted the gravity of Mariotti’s injuries, stating it was “one of the most serious” he had ever encountered.

Despite the severity, Mariotti is currently in stable condition at the Metro North Hospital and Health Service in Brisbane.
