Following a disturbing viral video, Midvale Mayor Marcus Stevenson took to Twitter to announce that Kathryn Smith, the woman featured in the video harassing a family with racial slurs and allegedly making threats, had been arrested on outstanding warrants.
The video, which was widely shared on TikTok, Instagram, and by the content creator (@TizzyEnt), showed Smith hurling racial slurs and threats at an interracial family. The incident sparked an immediate response from law enforcement, which resulted in Smith’s arrest for failing to appear at court appointments, including one for an assault case involving the adult female neighbor seen in the video.
“I’m hopeful that this is a positive step for the healing of the targeted family, the affected neighborhood, Ms. Smith, and our entire community,” Mayor Stevenson expressed in his tweet.
According to court documents, Smith, 67, was released on her recognizance with arraignments scheduled for January 11, 2024, in connection with a June 25, 2023, assault case and a July 1, 2023, property damage case, both class B misdemeanors.
The arrest comes at a critical juncture in dealing with the aftermath of the traumatic incident, with the Mayor emphasizing the importance of community healing.
