Maria Smith is a lecturer in the Department of Classics at the University of Georgia. She earned a BA in Classics from Willamette University, an MA from the University of Kansas, and a PhD from Indiana University. She comes to the University of Georgia from the University of New Hampshire, where she directed the Responsible Governance and Sustainable Citizenship Program within the Classics program in the Department of Classics, Humanities, and Italian. Previously, she was a lecturer in classics at the University of Southern California. Her research focuses on uncovering the lived experience of Romans during the High Empire, with a particular focus on the concurrent yet distinct attitudes of Pliny the Younger and the Samurai.
