Las Vegas Judge Mary Kay Holthus Faces Violent Attack by Disgruntled Man Denied Probation at Sentencing

On Wednesday, a Vegas judge found herself at the center of a violent attack carried out by a 30-year-old defendant named Debora Redden. Redden, a three-time felon, was in court for sentencing on attempted battery with serious bodily harm charges.

As the tension in the courtroom grew, Redden’s attorney argued for probation, prompting Judge Mary Kay Holthus to say, “I think it’s time he gets a taste of something else.” Nobody could have predicted the chaos that would follow.

Redden was caught on courtroom cameras running and leaping over the court bench, grabbing Judge Holthus by the hair. The shocking scene unfolded at an alarming rate, leaving witnesses and court officials stunned.

Amid the chaos, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson stated to assuage public fears about the judge’s safety.

“Thank God for the heroic efforts of those who came to her aid, especially her marshal and law clerk. Without them, the situation would have been much worse as this defendant exhibited extremely violent behavior, and I’m confident there will be consequences.”

The incident is a stark reminder of the unpredictability that can occur within the confines of a courtroom, even when authorities work hard to keep order.

As the legal repercussions play out, questions about the security measures in place and the implications for ensuring the safety of those who administer justice in our judicial system linger.
