The Justice Department announced today that it has settled 139 administrative claims related to allegations of sexual abuse committed by former physician and USA Gymnastics official Lawrence Gerard Nassar.
Larry Nassar’s abuse spanned nearly two decades, culminating in his arrest in 2016 by the State of Michigan.
The settlements aim to resolve administrative claims against the United States, alleging that the FBI failed to investigate Larry Nassar’s conduct adequately. A report from the Department’s Office of the Inspector General in July 2021 criticized certain aspects of the FBI’s response to the allegations against Nassar.
Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer commented, “For decades, Lawrence Nassar abused his position, betraying the trust of those under his care while avoiding accountability. These allegations should have been taken seriously from the outset. While these settlements won’t undo the harm Nassar inflicted, our hope is that they will provide the victims with some of the critical support they need to continue healing.”
The settlement agreements, approved by the Department, amount to $138.7 million to be distributed among the claimants.
