Following his marriage to Rosalynn Smith (Rosalynn Carter), a native of Plains, Georgia, Carter began a seven-year career in the U.S. Navy, spending five of those years on submarine service.
When his father passed away in 1953, he was getting ready to join the Seawolf submarine as an engineering officer. Carter went back to Georgia to oversee the family’s peanut field business after resigning his commission.
Carter started his political career as a member of the local board of education before winning a Democratic seat in the Georgia state senate in 1962 and was reelected the following year, 1964. After losing his 1966 governorship campaign, he turned to evangelical Christianity for comfort and became a born-again Baptist.
Before Carter successfully ran for governor again in 1970, he at least adopted a tacit segregationist stance. But after declaring in his inaugural speech that “the time for racial discrimination is over,” he opened Georgia’s government offices to both women and Black people.
In his capacity as governor, he tightened budgetary regulations for state agencies and reformed the current disorganized governmental apparatus into larger groups. During this process, he gained widespread recognition and was featured on the cover of Time magazine as a representation of the “New South” and sound governance.
