Today, September 27, is the birthday of Christopher James Hazencomb. He would turn 50 today but died in the Las Vegas Route 91 shooting at 44. He loved country music, auto racing, the Los Angeles Angels, and just about any other sporting event. He was a people person, big-hearted and happy-go-lucky. When shots rang out at the music festival, he shielded his good friend, the mother of two young boys, from the gunfire. Chris was shot in the head but stabilized and placed on a ventilator. His mother rushed to Las Vegas from her home in California, only to be faced with the agonizing decision to remove him from life support. At Chris’s funeral, family and friends donned sports jerseys to honor his passion for sports. Friends and co-workers told stories and celebrated his positivity and his helpful nature. One co-worker remembered how he taught her to find joy in every task by being thankful for the opportunity to soak up a little sunshine while gathering shopping carts from the parking lot of the Neighborhood WalMart where they worked together.
