Billie Eilish has shared the music video for her new single “What Was I Made For?” The song will be included on the soundtrack of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming ‘Barbie’ film.
Eilish and her brother and collaborator Finneas wrote the song specifically for Greta Gerwig’s new film. Finneas also produced the song at his home studio in Los Angeles.
In the lyrics, the singer candidly expresses her feelings of being purposeless and unable to enjoy life over her brother’s piano production.
“When did it end? / All the enjoyment / I’m sad again / Don’t tell my boyfriend,” she sings in one verse. “It’s not what he’s made for / What was I made for?”
The song will be featured in key scenes throughout the upcoming ‘Barbie’ film, which will be released next Friday. It highlights the film’s important message and sentiment beautifully and poignantly.
Eilish announced the record last week via Instagram. “We made this song for Barbie and it means the absolute world to me. This movie is gonna change your lives and hopefully the song will too. Get ready to sob.”
The singer-songwriter has since provided more information about how the opportunity arose and described how Gerwig approached her to be part of the soundtrack.
“In january greta showed me and finneas a handful of some unfinished scenes from the film; we had nooooo idea what to expect at ALLL… we were so deeeeeply moved.. that the next day we were writing and COULDNT shut up about it lolll andddddddddd ended up writing almost the entire song that night,” Eilish wrote.
The Grammy-winning singer said in her conclusion: “To be real with you this all seemed to happen in a time when i really needed it. i’m so so thankful for that.”
Along with Eilish, the ‘Barbie’ soundtrack features Lizzo, Charli XCX, Nicki Minaj, Pink Pantheress, Dua Lipa, Fifty Fifty, Sam Smith, Gayle, Haim, Dominic Fike, Khalid, Kali, Karol G, Tame Impala, The Kid Laroi, and Barbie’s own Ryan Gosling.
