Centre at Minto rec complex at 3500 Cambrian Rd

Emergency responders received reports of a possible tornado in the community of Barrhaven, about 20 kilometers south of downtown. The Ottawa Fire Service said there were reports of a tornado around 1 p.m. ET around Umbra Place, just west of Highway 416. The Ottawa Police Service also said they had received a similar report.

Other photos and videos on social media and emails to the CBC also reported seeing the funnel cloud. There is currently no information on injuries or major losses. The Minto Recreation Complex at 3500 Cambrian Road houses a family reunification center, according to the Ottawa Police Service.

About 1,800 Hydro Ottawa customers were without power in the area. Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for the Kanata, Orleans and downtown communities around 12:50 p.m.

A tornado warning means a tornado has been reported or there is good evidence that a tornado is imminent. As part of the warning, indoors, it’s best to head to the lowest level of a stable building possible, away from any exterior walls.

A late afternoon tornado watch covers the area from Renfrew to the Quebec border and from Maniwakee to Ottawa-Gatineau to Kingston.
