While conducting a routine patrol in Tsavo West, a fixed-wing pilot from the Trust noticed an approximately 45-year-old bull elephant with enormous tusks, a prime target for poachers. Suspecting something was amiss, the pilot circled back and identified a suspicious bump behind the elephant’s front left leg, indicating a poisoned arrow wound. Recognising the urgency, the team immediately sprang into action.

Despite their primary veterinary unit being on leave, the Trust quickly coordinated with the Amboseli team to ensure swift intervention. A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) vet was flown in via a caravan aircraft, while a helicopter guided the injured elephant to an open area. The intense rescue operation began as the vet darted the bull from the air, initiating the critical medical procedure.

According to the Trust’s official blog, the meticulous treatment involved Dr. Kariuki and his assistant, who removed dead flesh and thoroughly cleaned the wound. Throughout the procedure, the team kept the elephant cool and hydrated by pouring water behind his ears and along his spine. They also placed a small stick in his trunk to keep his airways open as he breathed heavily and steadily. After administering antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, the bull was successfully revived.
